Between August 2016 and August 2018 Matthew Speers was Chief Executive Officer of the Life Sciences Organisation (LSO) with the UK Department for International Trade leading a team of civil servants and sector specialists to support the Government’s international trade and investment strategy.
Previously Matthew was Chief Executive of PAGB (the Proprietary Association of Great Britain), which is the trade association for the branded over-the-counter medicines and food supplements businesses in the UK.
Prior to joining PAGB Matthew provided strategic advice and consultancy services to the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI) and Monmouth Partners. He also did voluntary work for the CHANGE, a charity working with people with learning disabilities, as well as the Patient Information Forum (PIF).
Matthew was Managing Director for the UK and Ireland for UCB Pharma Ltd.(2008 - 13). He joined UCB in 2006 as Regional General Manager responsible for the smaller and mid-sized European Union countries, based in Brussels.
The earlier part of Matthew's career was spent working for GlaxoSmithKline, in management consultancy (for Plexus Ventures Ltd) and in the biotechnology sector (as CEO of IC-Vec Ltd, a Japanese owned biotech company spun out from Imperial College London).
Matthew was a member of the ABPI Board of Management and Chair of the European Medicines Group (EMG). He has served on the Boards of the Association of the European Self-Medication Industry (AESGP) and World Self-Medication Industry (WSMI).
